HISTORY
Founded
in 1976, Aberdeen Full Bore Gun Club originally shot over a wartime RAF
range at Brimmond Hill, near Dyce, until it was closed as a result of
oil industry communication equipment being erected.
Pistol was then shot on the 30 metre outdoor and 25 metre indoor ranges
at Gordon Barracks at the Bridge of Don, and club membership rose to
around 120 in the early 1980's. When the Military closed the 30 metre
range at the Barracks, the club moved its activities to Black
Dog Military Ranges, just north of Aberdeen, where the 25m 'C' range
was used for pistol shooting three or four times a week, with monthly
rifle shoots on 'A' and 'B' ranges.
In 1992 the Club was able to construct its own complex North of Aberdeen with outdoor
50m and covered firing point 100m ranges, clubhouse and target sheds.
This was the club's home until 2019, but when the landowner wished to
redevelop the site those facilities were unfortunately lost. We had,
however, been using the excellent Denwood Shooting Centre, Countesswells
in Aberdeen City and had taken on a former range near Peterhead
(effectively to avoid it falling into total disuse), and since 2019 have
concentrated our efforts on those sites.
CURRENT FACILITIES
We
support all current Section 1 firearms, with our members participating
in all forms of small/full-bore rifle and muzzle-loading pistol/rifle shooting and are affiliated to NRA UK, Scottish Target Shooting, Aberdeen Sports Council and Aberdeenshire Sports Council.
As
a member club of the Denwood Association in Countesswells, with its
world-class smallbore facilities, we have the primary lead of the 50m
outdoor range and firing position building, with frequent use of the 25m
indoor range. We have now developed the site at Peterhead to provide
an outdoor 100m fullbore rifle, target shotgun, pistol calibre and
smallbore range, in addition to a separate 25m pistol calibre, black
powder pistol and smallbore range with a covered firing point. In
addition, we have regular fullbore rifle shoots at the MoD range at
Barry Budden near Dundee, allowing members to shoot out to 900m.
The
competitive Club Championships, Club Challenges and Open Competitions
support a wide range of disciplines ranging from precision, gallery
rifle & sporting rifle, target shotgun, small and full-bore action
rifle through to 'F'-class, benchrest etc. Many
of our members also compete in local, regional and national
competitions, including representation in Scottish National Teams and
individual medal winning performances at international events at Bisley .
